Malacañang: Bora rehab a proof of Duterte's political will

On April 26, 2018, Boracay was closed down for rehabilitation. Recently, it has been opened to the public and the Duterte administration is proud of this achievement.

Due to worsening environmental conditions in Boracay, President Rodrigo Duterte in February 2018 said he plans to close the resort island which he described as a "cesspool". He has instructed Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Roy Cimatu to resolve the issue. In a cabinet meeting, President Duterte ordered the full closure of the island, for six months effective April 26, 2018 to rehabilitate and resolve the environmental issues surrounding Boracay.

Malacañang lauded the government’s rehabilitation of the country’s top tourist destination Boracay, saying the bold move of shutting down the island for 6 months was a lesson of political will.

Boracay has opened its doors to tourists after months of rehabilitation works. Roads were widened and the island’s sewerage system which has beed blamed for polluting the beach was fixed.

The island started accepting tourists even as major road and infrastructure work remained unfinished.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said President Rodrigo Duterte was pleased with the rehabilitation of the island.
