Duterte: I'll slit throats of drug lords (except Peter Lim)

President Duterte has said that he will slit the throats of big-time drug traders (drug lords). However, it can be recalled that, when it comes to Peter Lim and other huge drug personalities, Malacañang has simple said: "Please surrender and please go to court." On the other hand, small-time drug dealers and users get killed on the spot.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday warned big-time drug traders that he has his eye on them and would not hesitate to slit their throats.

Speaking at the birthday celebration of former presidential adviser Francis Tolentino Wednesday, Duterte said, "'Pag big time ka, hindi kita papatawarin. Sa harapan ng human rights, I will slit your throat. Wala akong pakialam. Sabihin ko sa inyo, huwag mong gawain 'yan sa bayan ko. Talagang yayariin kita. So I could not be more clear."

[Translation: If you are a big time player, I will not forgive you. I will slit your throat in front of human rights. I don't care. I'm telling you not to do that to my country. I will get you. So I could not be more clear.]

The President added, "I'm just warning for the remaining three years na 'yung malalaki, talagang tatamaan 'yan. And if you ask me kung mamatay 'yan, mamamatay talaga 'yan."

Malacañang on Thursday appealed to suspected drug lord and now fugitive Peter Lim to surrender to authorities. In a press briefing, The Presidential Spokesperson said: “We’re asking Peter Lim, please surrender. If you are innocent, prove your innocence in court. You will be given your day in court.”

So who is Peter Lim—and why Malacañang’s suddenly tender appeal for his surrender, instead of the usual brisk denunciation of people like him?

The Cebu businessman first came under scrutiny in 2001 when he faced a congressional hearing on drugs, where two of his former employees testified against him. The hearing concluded that there was not enough evidence to pin Lim down. The two witnesses met suspicious deaths in 2006 and 2011, respectively.

On July 7, 2016, Mr. Duterte himself publicly identified Lim as among the biggest drug dealers in the country, along with Herbert Colangco, Peter Co and Kerwin Espinosa. In that same announcement, the President threatened Lim on national TV: “If he has friends here, tell him, the moment he lands here at Naia, he will die…”
