Gov: SC must DROP nurse group's petition for better pay

The Solicitor General is the “principal law officer and legal defender of the Republic.” Where government is a party, he determines the government’s legal position. The Solicitor General is the President’s lawyer and alter ego. The very least that can be expected of the Government’s top attorney, therefore, is for him to know the law.

The paragraph above explains the thumbnail of this post. The act of the Solicitor General is the act of the President unless and until the latter revokes or reverses such act.

NEWS: The government, through Solicitor General Jose Calida has asked the Supreme Court (SC) to dismiss the four-year old petition filed by Ang Nars Party-List which seeks to increase the salary of government nurses by enforcing a provision of Republic Act 9173 or the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002. During Tuesday’s oral argument, Calida said the petition should be dismissed for violating the hierarchy of courts.

WHO IS CALIDA? Solicitor General Jose C. Calida was appointed as the 48th Solicitor General of the Republic of the Philippines by newly elected President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in July 2016.
Jose "Joe" Callangan Calida (born July 7, 1950) is a Filipino lawyer and current Solicitor General of the Philippines. He was sworn into the post on June 30, 2016 to replace Florin Hilbay.
